FAQ

  • Why do I need a TESOL certificate?
  • Although many ESL teaching jobs abroad do not require any teaching experience, most (if not all) however now require that teachers have at least a 100-hour TESOL or TEFL certificate. In addition, many employers offer higher salaries to teachers that are certified.

  • Where can I teach?
  • You can teach in Asia, Eastern Europe, South America, the Middle East and more.

  • How much money can I make teaching?
  • Salary varies depending on the countries that you teach in, for example in the Middle East you make at least $45,000 USD a year while in Asia you make on average $30,000 USD a year.

  • What can I expect to be doing as an ESL teacher?
  • Most jobs require that you teach an average of 4 to 4 ½ hours a day. In addition, you will be required to create lesson plans, evaluate students and grade their school work. Job duties vary depending on teaching position.

  • What other benefits could I expect to receive as a certified ESL teacher?
  • Many jobs provide free furnished housing, low cost medical insurance (including dental and vision), roundtrip airfare (some will even pay for accompanying dependants as well as offer discounted or free education to your children), one week to one month vacation, major holidays off with pay (South Korea has at least 10 major holidays), sick days, some even provide lunch, direct deposit, little or no income tax, and more!

  • What's the difference between TESOL and TEFL?

  • There is actually no difference, both mean teaching English to those that do not speak English as their native language. However TESOL  (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is more so used in the US and TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) is primarily used in the UK.
