ESL Specialization Courses

For ESL/EFL teachers who would like to begin instructing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, specialized training is essential. Whether you want to teach business English to adults, academic English to teenagers, or English conversation to kindergarteners, understanding your students and knowing how to effectively manage and communicate with them are the hallmarks of success.

Our specialization courses strive to prepare teachers in two fundamental ways. First, teachers are provided with a detailed understanding of the learning characteristics and proclivities of their students. For example, teenage language learners need to be motivated much differently than children and adults, so these idiosyncrasies are explained and research data presented. And when it comes to teaching English to businessmen and businesswomen, developing a better sense of the tremendous variety of business norms and practices across the world is essential, so teachers are provided with a sampling of business customs from around the world.

The second way our specialization courses prepare teachers is by providing them with content-specific knowledge, and the techniques to effectively teach it. In the Business/Mature Learners course, for instance, teachers review, or perhaps learn for the first time, banking- and finance-specific vocabulary. They are then introduced to a range of role plays and group activities that provide an effective means for teaching this vocabulary.
